Intro to Humanities: Edgar Allen Poe

Edgar Allen Poe

I chose Edgar Allen Poe for a few reasons for todays topic.  One, I am from Baltimore, Maryland and he resided there in his adult life.  Baltimore, for some strange reason, take pride in him.  Our football team is The Ravens, named after his work "The Raven", and our mascots are named Edgar and Poe.
Secondly, I chose this because as creepy as his work is, it is very entertaining.

A little bit about Edgar Allen Poe (http://www.biography.com/people/edgar-allan-poe-9443160):

Born January 19, 1809, Boston, Massachusetts, U.S. American short-story writer, poet, critic, and editor Edgar Allan Poe's tales of mystery and horror initiated the modern detective story, and the atmosphere in his tales of horror is unrivaled in American fiction. His The Raven (1845) numbers among the best-known poems in national literature.

Spoken Word Is love Dead?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jg7S82PIGZw

I found this spoken word on youtube.  It was written by a man name Dustin, who asked his friend to record it.  I chose this spoken word because it is very true to today's society.   I do think that the meaning of love has changed, at least from a man to women type of love.   People will say anything today to get what they want, even if that means telling someone they don't love them, they do love them. Times have changed from when our grandparents were younger.  I do feel like todays society wont experience love like back in the days.  Conversations have be replaced with text messages and facebook posts.

Dance- River Dance

Riverdance is a theatrical  show consisting mainly of traditional Irish music and dance. Featuring Irish Dancing Champions Jean Buttler and Michael Flately, and with a score composed by Limerick native Bill Whelan, it originated as an interval performance during the 1994 Eurovision Song Contest. Shortly afterwards husband and wife production team John McColgan and Moya Doherty expanded it into a stage show, which opened in Dublin on 9 February 1995.

I chose Riverdance because when I was younger I had the pleasure of going and seeing one of their shows.  It was amazing to see these people dance!

Cinema- Dear John

I chose a scene from Dear John written by Nicholas Sparks.  I chose this movie because I have read all of Nicholas Sparks books and this is one of my favorite.  This movie was made in 2010 and directed by Lasse Hallstrom.  Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried are the main actor/actress in the movie.  I chose a female love scene because in class we compared the difference between male and female directed love scenes.  There are many different camera angles used in this scene to get a better emotional feel and connection to the characters and what is happening.

Theatre Beauty and the Beast

I chose Beauty and the Beast musical for this week's topic.  I chose this because Beauty and the Beast has always been one of my favorite Disney movies.  I have had the pleasure of seeing this in the theater and musical form at the dinner show and at the Bob Carr.
